Slight retrexturing. Oh, and check the model if you don't believe me on the 9668 polygons thing. ^_^ http://illuminati-fiction.net/bpen/render/trimaran.l3p Okay, quick recap on Kitaran history. The Liyana are tall, golden-haired people from the the twin northern contintents of Ilanya and Silenya, predominantly Ilanya. They are warlike; raiders and pirates, the Kitarans equivalent to Viking raiders. They were a constant menace to the Sularisa: those of the one land, also known as the central continent Sulas. Their predatory ways ended in the Black Flag War, in which the Sularisa beat the Liyana so badly that their entire culture reinterpreted itself to become even more commercial, cultured, and snootily noble than even the merchant kings of the Sularis. Thus begins both the democratic alliances of what would be Clan Solaris (a coalition of smaller kingdoms to defend against the raiders from the north) and the matriarchal Liyo (for too long pointless wars of conquest has bled the Liyan). Anyways, the longboat as like the Vikings, is the symbol of the Liyani raiders. Unlike the Vikings though, they liked to use armor and were drilled before battle. The Liyana were the first to use bronze, and actually introduced such weapons to the greater continent. When steel came about, the Liyani had to conquer their sister continent for its ore and ally with the dark continent of Issaya to the south for oil. It's those people that really slow down the PC. If you remove them, the ship itself is very low-poly (not as interesting though). All right, since we're in a competitive mood anyway, here are the rules. a. You MUST use only basic DOGACGA parts. That is, those that come with L1 or L3. The use of only basic DOGA textures, the defaults of L3, is recommended but not essential. b. You MUST upload the .l3p of your model, for others to see how you put it all together. If you used custom textures, include it. These renders must be replicatable on others' computers. c. You should post two types of renders, a basic easy-to render one called the 'proof model' using only basic parts and textures, and a 'show model' to display what the model should look. The latter may use custom textures and backgrounds. The former, along with its l3p, is what you should upload. d. You should keep the polycount down, to make it easier for you or others to tweak the look of the ships or render a fleet scenario. This only applies to the proof model, though it will also help you when you render the show model. d.1. There is now a polycount limit of 26000 for the proof model. Anything below that number is okay (we normally round off to the thousandth when speaking of renders anyway). e. You should post your entry renders here. Outside of this thread, you may use custom parts. e. This challenge shall last only for the duration of this month. At March 1, it's done. Winner shall be by voting, in a specific thread with a poll (separate from this thread). f. The eventual judging outcome shall be as to: 1. Call The Cops! He (or she) who abuses parts so gratuitously! To the overall best Doga modeler. 1a. Get Them! I don't pay you minions to stand around! To the best collection of quality models. 2. Shake Those Moneymakers! Got a face full of shine! To the best-looking Doga render of the bunch. 3. Limit Breaks! So few can accomplish so much! To the best model of less than 16000 parts. 4. Pushing It! The engine cannae take any more of this captain! To the best model of approaching 26000 parts. 5. Copyasta! What's mine is mine, what's yours is mine! To the best use of others' models. In before a frothing tide of disapproval. ^_^ 15275 polygons. The turrets themselves are six parts each. Duuude. Those battleplates were massive. Who else but Zalluns would think of making one? (Well, alright; me. But that's beside the point.) Now, building such a thing would involve horrendous amounts of time and resources. What better thing to project your power, now that you've conquered the entire planet? The Tyrus landships are mobile command bases, capable of plowing through the tallest of dunes or the worst sandstorms (which are why it's not recommended to leave planes exposed on deck). According to Zallun lore, it was Zallus' masterful use of the combustion engine that won him all of the tribes. Given that Zalluns live for around 400, and have a culture of patience and forethought, it can be assumed that the technological level of the Zallun unification war(no matter how long it lasted) went from late 1900s to early 1940s. A planet is a big thing. What did the Zalluns do BEFORE the roads and monorails were built? It would be foolish to assume every settlement is more or less equidistant from each other. Cities would follow spots of resources, oases, or underground river systems. There are no oceans on Zallus. The reason for building the biggest landship might be similar to say, the Yamato, except for one thing. It's a LANDSHIP. It's on LAND. IT CANNOT. SINK. Remember that the major contributions the Zalluns gave to the weapons- tech of the Federation are: 1. The structural integrity field. 2. Their massive sabot/rail cannons. 3. Their excellent torpedos. There are no oceans on Zallus. They would have developed torpedotech only AFTER going into space. Before that, what do they have to destroy enemy landships? Torpedoes are far simpler to make than missiles. The whole need for propellant and loss of a guidance system on impact makes the use of missiles expensive at best, unreliable as is expected. Even if the guns blow up, then the lower portions would still survive. If the tracks are damaged, the guns won't fall silent. To take down a landship this size would require lots of bombs and constant pounding. Tanks are worthless if the enemy fortress they're going to assault is up on an incline, behind thick walls. What is combined arms without air or naval support? If a transatlantic tunnel was built, would that obsolete the merchant marine? Go ahead. Tell me that the Zalluns would NEVER see the need for big mobile guns or mobile airbases. They would never need ships of a sort to cross their dry seas. Blitzkrieg was helped by the presence of roads, overall calm weather, refueling stations, target cities that aren't mostly underground, lax enemy military, and that Europe is tiny compared to all the rest of the world. Would not open desert be quicker to cross, as per the Africa campaigns? Zallus makes the Sahara look like a sandbox however. If you are hit by constant sandstorms, would you think of researching thinly-protected airplanes first or thickly-armored vehicles to push through the worst the world could throw at you? If there was nothing but far barrens between you and your enemy, would you gamble on being able to replenish yourself from your enemy's stocks or plod on secure in your supplies of food, water and ammunition? Where else would Zalluns have developed their love for armor at expense of speed? With these lumbering giants of the open desert, pounding the hell out of each other. If they were to be so 'sensible' and focus on ordnance and delivery technology to punch through armor and obsolete battleships... then they'd be Kitarans. Mobility uber alles. Of course, that's also a detrimental extreme. The median are the Derivians. They are all different cultures, with different outlooks on WHAT is militarily sensible. It's the differences that make them interesting. http://illuminati-fiction.net/bpen/render/landship.l3p http://illuminati-fiction.net/bpen/render/landships.l3p After having united the land, that's when the Zalluns could look to space. There, they could find new worlds more welcoming of life. For freeing them from the endless cycle of violence and hardship, the Zalluns so revered Zallus that they renamed the homeworld after him. Hell, they STARTED WORSHIPPING HIM AS THEIR CHIEF DIETY when he was no longer around to protest their devotions. It would be supremely ironic if Zallus turned out to have actually ascended, eh? Just a random thought. Planning nothing here, no sir. Anyways, moving on. The charm of the landship can be summed up as thus: The Emperor has come to visit. Entertain thoughts of rebellion? (y/n)_ Also, fixed the liyani longboat to conform by removing the spearmen. It's now 25290 polygons. As expected, it doesn't look quite as good. 8971 polygons. ^_^ http://illuminati-fiction.net/bpen/render/spaceship.l3p I'm going to make a cutaway version with components clearly marked, but it might take some time and would certainly no longer match perfectly to this render. Anyways, the primary docking hatch is up front. As it's the most vulnerable part of the ship, if necessary the braking thrusters can vaporize whatever it's docked to. The hatch to the rear is for cargo, and contains two assault shuttles doubling as escape pods in an emergency. Those aren't solar cells at the side, but heatsink strips. They're for quickly stifling the heat from the reactor and engines once at proper acceleration, to reduce the ship's heat signature. The warship is covered with radar-absorbing materials and will send off dummies prior to attacking. The moment they fire manuevering thrusters though, it's game over. Everyone can see that drive flame. Stealth is gone, it's down to an exchange of fire. The heatsinks are located away from the body of the craft, even though a rounded strip would be more efficient, for this will hoprefull divert heatseekers away from the main hull. Its armaments are two rail launchers shotting off either meter-long steel poles, or guided missiles(ideally for firing while still in appreciable stealth). It has two laser cannons for medium-range combat or shooting down incoming missiles. The round things on the opposite symmetrical mounts are the targeting sensors. The ball tanks are secondary propellant tanks. For main propulsion, the ship uses a fusion drive, supplemented by a heatless ion drive through a magnetic funnel (those big curving beams around the aft engine). The round things are propellant tanks, mainly containing water or helium-3 (though sometimes loaded with rocket fuel for improved combat maneuvering). I don't know how to class this ship. A fusion/ion drive gives it some degree of independence but its weapons loadout is for defensive duties. Combat accelleration is a constant problem though I expect space warfare for the tech level of this ship to happen in ranges well beyond line of sight. I name it the Ringwraith. ^_~
